Clyde Conwell
**Born in the Adirondacks of New York, but rooted in the Southern United States, I spent the last twenty years moving. First energized by ten years of participation in DIY queer punk scenes, sparking collaboration, organizing, and performances across the USA. I vocally fronted various bands, lyrically prioritizing accessibility, queer visibility, and the importance of nuance. Songwriting mirrors the process of my painting, intuitively building structure from improvisation and investigating from experience. I transitioned back into painting, serendipitously through studying forestry and woodworking. <>•<>•<>•<>•<> In painting, the canvas captures subjective empowerment, leading to my own philosophical proposition around painting being the original screen. [-] Here the personal is adapted to challenge the cyclical nature of ideologies and power. By accepting the limitations of the frame, the canvas acts as a prosthesis of the self, offering a point of departure for constant experimentation and a tool for subsequent dialogue. My work spends time reiterating the interconnectivity of our lives between each other, objects, and place. I push imagery to open perspective. For me the canvas is an ecological site colliding the representation of body and space. _\\*//_ .In my prior commitments to community organization, accessibility, & the growth of creative arts outside of city centers, I have an array of exhibition experience in regional museums & international group shows, to public space interventions, self-organized events, & community art spaces. I have collaborated in events & exhibitions at the Cameron Art Museum (Wilmington, NC), 130 Gallery at WCU (Cullowhee, NC), NC Museum of Art (Raleigh, NC), Elsewhere Living Museum & Artist Residency (Greensboro, NC), L/A Arts (Lewiston, ME), Marcia Wood Gallery (Atlanta, GA), B-Complex (Atlanta, GA), Cucalorus Film Festival (Wilmington, NC), & Tanya Leighton (Los Angeles, CA and Berlin, DE). I founded the art collective, snakes4gardens, in Athens, GA from 2018-2020. I received a BA in Studio Art from Bard College. I graduated from Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule studying with Monika Baer and I hold an MFA from the University of Georgia. ((/))*
